Every ninety years, twelve gods are incarnated into humans to enjoy a limited two-year lifespan, this time appearing as pop stars, and college student Laura finds herself in her midst as one of the gods is set up for murder.
WrensReads Review:
So this is what I gathered from this very unexplained book.
We have Laura (a not white girl lead which is very refreshing). She is literally like a fifteen year old girl fan-girling about Justin Bieber, except what she fan-girls about are gods.
Concept: Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans.
Literally copied and pasted that from the actual synopsis. That’s basically all they tell you about the whole book. That doesn’t really give you much to lean on.
I asked questions like:
what gods?
Are these like the Greek, Norse, or Roman gods or just random gods that the author made up?
Lucifer (one of these so-called gods) is actually an angel, so are we just pretending that doesn’t exist and now he’s a god or is the “she” Lucifer a completely different Lucifer and I’m just not picking up on that?
Why are they reincarnated into people?
Why do they only live for two years?
What gods are there? (note: they literally just start throwing names at you and you’re expected to grab them and just know because obviously you’re an idiot if you don’t already know who they are)
What was with the group of people in the beginning who just randomly died? I think? I’m not sure.
What did these “gods” actually do to deserve god status besides having some cool tricks up their sleeves?
Speaking of cool tricks, are they tricks or are they actual powers?
AND FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING GOOD IN THE WORLD, WHAT IS WITH THE “01-02-03-04 *SNAP* CRAP? IS THAT SOMETHING I SHOULD KNOW? IS THAT SOME SORT OF WAY THAT THEY HAVE POWER? DO THEY ACTUALLY HAVE POWER OR?
What I have gathered:
The counting thing and the snapping thing is how they access their power (maybe?).
No one knows why they only come around every ninety years and die after two.
They become humans because why not? Not just humans, but people already born. It’s like they just take over that person’s body.
It isn’t always the same group of gods, but I also don’t know what gods do what or who is who or anything of that nature. Besides the like three gods that were there the most.
Basically, it was not a good execution.
I was confused a lot of the time and I am not sure if it was just because everything was just really really pretty or I was literally just not grasping the concept of it.
The story is basically about Lucifer going rogue (that sounds familiar) and not caring about what happens to everyone else and not following the rules. Don’t think that went as planned, did it Luci ol’ girl?
The fan girl Laura tries to help Luci and basically gets on a first-name basis with a lot of the gods, and I don’t think that’s going to work out in her favor.
I am going to keep reading it because what I did grasp was kind of interesting and I do have a love for humanoid-gods (like Greek, Roman, Norse, etc.. Just anything that is mythology I absolutely love).
