Cinder is back and trying to break out of prison--even though she'll be the Commonwealth's most wanted fugitive if she does--in this second installment from Marissa Meyer. Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit's grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn't know about her grandmother, or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother's whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana. An NPR Best Book of 2013
WrensReads Review:
How in the world do people rate this book any lower than a five? Seriously, I’m over here loving Scarlet and her “alpha” personality and everything that she stands for. How do people think she is annoying?
This was me this whole book:
Like literally constantly sucking in a breath and holding it, then after I have processed what happened, I do it again. So again, why you be mad about this installment? Was it because it wasn’t only Cinder and Kai’s point of views anymore? Scarlet wasn’t just thrown in there for kicks and giggles, her story proved very important to the story as a whole.
Was it because Scarlet was so dominate in her personality? Because, and I apologize in advanced for my feminism side popping out, but I loved that side of her.
It wasn’t the guy always making the move or constantly wanting more than just a snuggle. This girl took charge of her heart and went after what she wanted and didn’t care if she was “suppose” to wait till he made the first move.
Scarlet’s grandmére is missing. And I don’t mean like she packed a bag and left town. She literally was in the middle of doing something and and left without a trace. Her chip was even left back at her house so no one could track her. It’s been like three weeks, and everyone just assumes it’s the town’s crazy person doing something crazy.
She wasn’t doing something crazy. I’m not going to go into details, because spoilers; but seriously, her grandmother has a lot of explaining to do.
Side note: she could have made this a beauty and the beast retelling too if she substituted grandmére for dad.
Cinder is on the run with no other than every girl’s favorite smooth talker: Cadet Captain Carswell Thorne. He is hilarious. Cinder couldn’t be annoyed more, but I couldn’t be anymore entertained. Cinder is on the hunt for more information about herself, how she got to be the way she is and what she is going to do about it.
This is Thorne and all his glory.
She is finally realizing that maybe the choices she thought were for the best, actually made things a lot worse. Kai may need her more than she knows. Will she risk it, or continue running?
Kai is so confused. Between his heart and his mind, he can’t decided what to do exactly about Cinder. The Lunar Queen Levana is beyond steaming and is ready to declare war on Earth because she doesn’t have Cinder in her clutches. What is he to do? How can he calm her?
WOLF, my dear.
He doesn’t understand many things because he isn’t from around there. But he has a kind side that he doesn’t let a lot see, either because he doesn’t want to or because he can’t. You never know what side he is actually on though. I’m still kind of wondering just because he gave me a lot of whiplash.
Basically, I loved this installment. There was war. There were animalistic people. There were secrets revealed. There were so many twist. There were so many surprises. And there was a horrible ending that makes me wish I could read the next book like right now. It wasn’t really a cliff hanger, but it wasn’t comforting.
Now I’m ready for my third girl. I hear Cress is the best one yet..
