"Sara Holland is a fierce storyteller. Everless gives new and terrifying meaning to the phrase running out of time." —Stephanie Garber, New York Times bestselling author of Caraval In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries. No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever. But going back to Everless brings more danger—and temptation—than Jules could have ever imagined. Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the fate of time itself. Fans of Victoria Aveyard, Kendare Blake, and Stephanie Garber will devour this lush novel's breathtaking action, incredible romance, and dangerous secrets.
WrensReads Review:
This was pretty predictable for me. I’m not sure if its because I’ve been reading YA books since I was [05] years old or if it is just kind of predictable. I found myself kind of zoning out in parts and coming back and realizing I didn’t really miss a lot of what was happening.
Let me start again,
So I love the aspect of this. I am obsessed with the move TIME with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. The currency is time. They have a ticking bomb, so to say, on the inside of their arm and you have to grab each others arms to make a withdraw or deposit. So there were like games of chances on who could withdraw from who before the other gives up. It looked a lot like arm wrestling.
Back to the point, this is what I was expecting when I went into this book. Instead, people withdraw by dripping blood into iron coins or they eat/drink things with dissolved coins. It’s all really interesting. When they come close to their end, they start going mad. I like the more, ehh, gory way to withdraw your time for a lack of better term. Blood and Time are more valuable than a piece of paper that you hand to the drive-thru clerk, so it makes sense that this would be a currency.
Our main squeeze Jules is (wait for it) POOR. So she has to (wait for it) sign up to work in the castle to support her father (shocking). And she has some run-ins with (hold your breath) princes (MORE THAN ONE I KNOW) but (oh my gosh, TWIST) she can’t let them know who she is because (gasp) she has a big secret that would be life changing for them. I know that was dramatic, but it’s 2018 and I feel like this plot has been played out a little bit. There are some bigger twist at the end that make it a little more original, but I don’t see the hype surrounding this one. I do want to go on with the series, because there is a romance I am interested in seeing roll out, but the characters need a little more rounding and the story needs to take a different turn for me to bawl my eyes out and scream in happiness for this series.
