The sequel—and conclusion—to Victoria Schwab’s instant #1 New York Times bestseller, This Savage Song. Kate Harker is a girl who isn’t afraid of the dark. She’s a girl who hunts monsters. And she’s good at it. August Flynn is a monster who can never be human. No matter how much he once yearned for it. He has a part to play. And he will play it, no matter the cost. Nearly six months after Kate and August were first thrown together, the war between the monsters and the humans is a terrifying reality. In Verity, August has become the leader he never wished to be, and in Prosperity, Kate has become the ruthless hunter she knew she could be. When a new monster emerges from the shadows—one who feeds on chaos and brings out its victim’s inner demons—it lures Kate home, where she finds more than she bargained for. She’ll face a monster she thought she killed, a boy she thought she knew, and a demon all her own. A gorgeously written dark fantasy from New York Times-bestselling author Victoria Schwab, and one to hand to fans of Holly Black, Laini Taylor, and Maggie Stiefvater.

WrensReads Review:

I cannot express to you how amazing this series is. I love Victoria Schwab’s Brain Children. I would marry her imagination if that was something plausible. They are always dark, mysterious and thrilling and that’s just the thing I love.

This series doesn’t have romance in it. There’s like a weird moment in this book that there kind of is, but then it is never spoken of and I was okay with that. With that being said, if you are a romance-junkie (yawn, not me), then this series may not appeal to you.

We have our two lovelies, Kate and August.

Both are hunting monsters and saving the innocent in different cities. Both have moved on with their lives since the last book, but both are still haunted by things that happened.

So when Kate is attacked by not a Corsai, not a Malchai, not a Sunai, but a brand new monster, she tries to take it down but actually leads it back to her home town that has been run by the devil himself, Sloan, and the devil she made, Alice (who is a very good edition to the dark side).

She goes to the only people still alive in the city and helping the innocent and tracking and killing the monsters: August.

I absolutely love the character development in this duology. The characters have flaws and are relatable and the plot thickens with each page. Now, Our Dark Duet didn’t hit home as much as Our Savage Song, but I feel it was a great edition to this world.

I am just really, really sad that this world has come to an end. I NEED MORE!

I’m just going to go around singing this creepy little tune for the rest of my life..

“Monsters Monsters big and small,
they’re gonna come and eat you all
.

Corsai Corsai, tooth and claw
shadow and bone will eat you raw
.

Malchai Malchai, sharp and sly,
smile and bite and drink you dry
.

Sunai Sunai, eyes like coal,
sing you a song and steal your soul
.”

WHAT IS THE TUNE FOR THE NEW MONSTER?

Ugh, I LOVED THIS SERIES SO MUCH I WANT TO READ IT FOR THE FIRST TIME AGAIN DANG IT!

#1 New York Times Bestseller * An Amazon Best Book of the Year There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from acclaimed author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books, This Savage Song is a must-have for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor. Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives. In This Savage Song, Victoria Schwab creates a gritty, seething metropolis, one worthy of being compared to Gotham and to the four versions of London in her critically acclaimed fantasy for adults, A Darker Shade of Magic. Her heroes will face monsters intent on destroying them from every side—including the monsters within.

WrensReads Review:

Let me sing you a little song…

Guys, this book is so legit.
The author herself put it the best way:

Sin City,

PLUS Romeo and Juliet,

MINUS romance,

PLUS monsters!

You have basically the daughter of a thug named Kate Harker who is trying to prove she belongs by her dad’s side in one part of the city and a catastrophe-made monster named August Flynn who is fighting to keep his humanity on the other side of the city. Both trying to keep the truce between the two parts of town when everyone else is trying to lay blame to break it. They both have different things going on in their heads and their parts of the world, but they soon come to realize they are apart of a bigger plan.

I loved that there was no romance. There needs to be more books without the romance because romance sometimes just takes over the book itself. This book had depth, drive, action, friendship and twist and it had nothing to do with romance. NOTHING! It was amazing.

The only thing I can think of is that I wish we had more explanation on the monsters. Maybe she did that on purpose, because the less you know the more mysterious and scary it can be, but I want to know all the gory details about these creepy crawlers. I love monsters, omgsh I LOVE MONSTERS.

I can’t spill my heart fast enough for this book. I didn’t have mushy gushy feelings for it, I just have awesome and amazing feelings. I love the characters, I love that there was no romance, I love that there are these monsters, I love the rivalry, I JUST LOVE THIS BOOK.

On a side note, Victoria Schwab has this love for girls with some sort of disability it seems. Lila Bard with only one eye to see, and now Kate Harker with only one ear to hear. I absolutely love that she puts people with a disadvantage front and center to show they can do just as much as you can with all of your senses intact.

Read this book. I need the second book. Give me. the second. BOOK.
