A Song of Ice and Fire #04: A Feast For Crows

December 11, 2017 / 04 STARS, GRRMARTIN A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE

A Feast for Crows Book Cover A Feast for Crows
A Song of Ice and Fire
George R. R. Martin
Fiction
Spectra
2005
Hardcover
753

The uneasy peace that exists following the death of Robb Stark is threatened by new plots, intrigues, and alliances that once again will plunge the Seven Kingdoms into all-out war for control of the Iron Throne.

WrensReads Review:

Can we not have names that are literally the same? Arya, Arys, Areo, Aeron, Arianne… like COME ON MARTIN. It is so difficult to remember people as it is. I swear you do it on purpose.

Points Of Views I Really Liked/Followed:
Cersei | Sansa | Arya | Jamie | Samwell | Brienne

Others/New/New POV I Didn’t:
Arianne Martell | Aeron Greyjoy | Asha Greyjoy | Areo Hotah | Arys Oakheart | Victarion Greyjoy |

Cersei is literally a woman of no actual feelings. She cares about nothing but making sure her family is in control of the world. And by family I mean Cersei herself.
Jamie
Sansa is slowly but surely learning more and more about Littlefinger’s plans
Arya is finally dealing with the Many Faced-God.
Jamie needs to watch out because his sister has had just about enough of him.
Samwell is so cute but to be cute in Westeros is like being a mouse and dangling before a pride of lions. Get your stuff together man.
Brienne will NEVER FIND HER “SISTER” at this rate.

This book is my least favorite in the series. I hate that I didn’t have Tyrion and his sassy but classy act, or Daenerys and her strong and determined personality or Jon and his oh-everything-just-kind-of-gets-handed-to-me-and-idk-what-to-do-but-it-will-work-out type of ‘tude.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a pleasant enough read, but the Stark sisters and the Lannister twins are just not enough when it comes to that big of a book. Throw in some characters that I don’t really know or don’t really care about and I just don’t find the read as enjoyable as expected.

OBVIOUSLY WILL CONTINUE WITH THE SERIES BECAUSE HOW CAN YOU NOT SERIOUSLY

Fiction
Spectra
1999
Hardcover

Five separate factions vie for control of the realm of the late Lord Eddard Stark, while an ancient form of magic, an everlasting winter, and an unearthly army threaten to return

WrensReads Review:

So it took my like half a year (literally) to finish this book. I would just get so distracted with other books! This one is so large that it takes over YOUR LIFE. I finally made it my book car so I got the audiobook. And let me tell you, someone reading this book to you is kind of awesome.

Sansa is still betrothed to Joffrey, the horrible child king who likes to beat women and yet still calls got his mommy when he is in trouble.

Arya is still on the run, pretending to be a boy. She saves a prisoners life who says to thank her, he will take three lives for her. But Arya’s list of those she wants to kill is growing and growing and growing…who will she pick?

Jon is sworn to the wall and is on a quest beyond the wall. Where Giants, Children of the Forest, White Walkers, Free Folk, Shadowcats, and other creatures of the winter nights. He catches himself a Wildling/Free Folk girl tho that tells him stories of his ancestors…

Theon is tired of his sister getting all his rightfully-born glory. He needs to do something to show he deserves it. So he takes over Winterfell. The people don’t love him though. And some of high blood are trying to escape from under his thumb.

Daenerys is just trying to get to her rightful throne: The Iron Throne. She has her dragons and is now trying to gather an army and ships. But it’s harder than it seems. Everyone wants something in return and it is usually her dragons or her bed. Some are even trying to take her life.

Tyrion is over his sister. He is the King’s Hand, appointed by their father, and is trying to set be he kingdom straight under his nephews rule. He is hiding his whore, fighting a war, and trying to keep the young lady Sansa safe from the child king.

Catelyn is trying to make the Baratheon brothers bond together to take out the bigger evil: Lannister. But they aren’t having it. After one kills the other by magic, a lady knight is taken under Catelyn’s wing. Robb is still king of the North, but the Baratheons called him a traitor. Does this mean the love between the two families is severed?

Davos is worried about his lord, wait no, his King Stannis Baratheon. He has taken a Red Lady who does very dark magic under is arm and is practically making her his right hand man. Stannis won’t listen to anything that he says. All he is worried about is getting his right to the throne over his brother, the incest-born child king, that Stark Boy and any other stupid guy who thinks the throne is his. And he will kill anyone who stands in his way to his throne.

Bran is living in his dreams. He becomes a wolf and chases three eyed crows. One of his peers hears this and calls him a warg: someone who can enter the mind of any other living thing. When the prince’s kingdom is taken over by a man who was once his friend, he must figure out a way to free himself and his little brother.

This world is WONDERFUL. It doesn’t matter if you are a “good guy” or if you do the right thing, you can still die. The bad guy may actually get what he wants. There are no rules. Magic is there but it isn’t the main focus. The main focus is power, which is what humanity focuses on as well.

That’s it: this book is very human.

The Clash of Kings is a wonderful continuation of Game of Thrones. Martin has the different voices for each character depending on morals, gender and age. The writing is a ten out of ten. Martin is taking forever to write these but if he was rushed it wouldn’t be as wonderful as a masterpiece.

Excited about the next one!

Lord of the Flies

December 10, 2017 / 04 STARS, WGOLDING YR AR YA NOVELS

Lord of the Flies Book Cover Lord of the Flies
William Golding
Fiction
Penguin Group USA
1999
Paperback
182

The classic study of human nature which depicts the degeneration of a group of schoolboys marooned on a desert island.

WrensReads Review:

Everyone I tell that I am reading this book, they look at me and go “why?”.

Why not?

When I was forced to read this book in high school, or really any book I was forced to read in high school, I really enjoyed it. I was that student that would read the whole thing before Chapter 01 was due for the whole class. I enjoyed reading and I enjoyed reading classics. I especially love books with underlining meanings like Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies.

Golding did a marvelous job at showing us what humanity would be like if we left it alone with no rules or structure.

He sets the book up on a secluded island where a bunch of grade-school boys find themselves after a plane crash. Now of course they are so excited about having no adults, no rules, no anything. They slowly begin to realize they will need some rules in order to get anything done.

When you first hear about this book, you think of a lot of little savages and how they kill each other and have absolutely no order. In reality though, these are upper class, some privately-educated, proper boys. Golding intended to show the world that without order, anyone can become a savage.

Even with the small order that the boys made, there was a struggle between groups.

There is even an underlining of Christianity in this book, in my own opinion (ex. Simon).

This book is completely interesting and gets better with every read. I wouldn’t let anyone below a high school education read it though, because I have heard of some people getting nightmares because of the gore and violence described in this book.

But I love it, so I wonder what that actually says about me.
