The once-beautiful Hotel Dumort has fallen into a decayed thing, a ruin, as dead as a place can be. But the vampires don’t mind… This standalone e-only short story illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality populates the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series. This story in The Bane Chronicles, The Fall of the Hotel Dumort, is written by Cassandra Clare and Maureen Johnson.

WrensReads Review:

YES YES YES ALL THE YES.

DRUGGY VAMPIRES. WEREWOLVES. MAGNUS.

There really isn’t much more to say about this one. It was really good. This is what I needed. I feel as if they could have wrote a whole series on the idea of this.

A Manhattan teen—Raphael Santiago—is missing, and Magnus Bane must track him down before it’s too late. One of ten adventures in The Bane Chronicles. In 1950s New York City, a distraught mother hires Magnus Bane to find her missing son, Raphael. But even if he can be found, is Raphael beyond saving? This standalone e-only short story illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality populates the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices. This story in The Bane Chronicles, Saving Raphael Santiago, is written by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan.

WrensReads Review:

Now THIS ONE is the one that I can get on board with.

I have a soft spot for Raphael (the book Raphael, not the TV Raphael or the movie Raphael), especially after how you learn how he became a vampire and how he got to the point that he is in now.

Raphael’s mom (there’s no way to get around that) goes to Magnus because her son as disappeared and she wants him back. There have been rumors and sightings of blood-sucking monsters and she was one of the defenders against them.

Later, Magnus learns about a horrible, scary, unbelievable monster that a past lover has welcomed to New York City with open arms…

I love learning more about Magnus’ past though. It explains a lot more of his personality and why he does the things that he does. He is probably the best character that Clare has wrote honestly.

The Mortal Instruments #01: City of Bones

December 29, 2015 / 04 STARS, CC YA THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS

City of Bones Book Cover City of Bones
The Mortal Instruments
Cassandra Clare
Juvenile Fiction
Margaret K. McElderry
February 19, 2008
Hardcover
485

Suddenly able to see demons and the Darkhunters who are dedicated to returning them to their own dimension, fifteen-year-old Clary Fray is drawn into this bizzare world when her mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a monster.

WrensReads Review:

So this story starts as all young adults do (okay, at least most of them). A young girl who all of a sudden realizes she is something she is not and she can do things that no one else can and she has to save the world.

That’s the idea.

But you won’t be bored.

With this being Cassandra Clare’s first debut as an author, her writing as a little poor. It is definitely towards a younger young adult audience. The story itself though is golden.

You get the whole forbidden love with a side of a love triangle.

We have our vampires, our werewolves, our warlocks, and even our fae. But don’t be discouraged by the mainstream of it all. The story itself will keep you on your toes and will keep you interested.

I will tell you though, that her other two series are BETTER. But the sad part is that you need to read this one to get and understand characters and the plot and why things happened the way they did. And don’t just try to watch the movie or the show (because yes, there are both), because they take liberties that shouldn’t have been taken.

Read this series. Read the next. Maybe read the novellas if you are feeling up for it. But READ the last series. The Infernal Devices and The Dark Artifices are GOLDEN.
