The Night Circus

August 7, 2016 / 04 STARS, EM YA NOVELS

The Night Circus Book Cover The Night Circus
Erin Morgenstern
Fiction
Doubleday Books
2011
Audiobook
387

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it, no paper notices plastered on lampposts and billboards. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.

Within these nocturnal black-and-white striped tents awaits an utterly unique, a feast for the senses, where one can get lost in a maze of clouds, meander through a lush garden made of ice, stare in wonderment as the tattooed contortionist folds herself into a small glass box, and become deliciously tipsy from the scents of caramel and cinnamon that waft through the air.

Welcome to Le Cirque des Rêves.

Beyond the smoke and mirrors, however, a fierce competition is under way--a contest between two young illusionists, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood to compete in a "game" to which they have been irrevocably bound by their mercurial masters. Unbeknownst to the players, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will.

As the circus travels around the world, the feats of magic gain fantastical new heights with every stop. The game is well under way and the lives of all those involved--the eccentric circus owner, the elusive contortionist, the mystical fortune-teller, and a pair of red-headed twins born backstage among them--are swept up in a wake of spells and charms.

But when Celia discovers that Marco is her adversary, they begin to think of the game not as a competition but as a wonderful collaboration. With no knowledge of how the game must end, they innocently tumble headfirst into love. A deep, passionate, and magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

Their masters still pull the strings, however, and this unforeseen occurrence forces them to intervene with dangerous consequences, leaving the lives of everyone from the performers to the patrons hanging in the balance.

Both playful and seductive, The Night Circus, Erin Morgenstern's spell-casting debut, is a mesmerizing love story for the ages.

WrensReads Review:

If you are looking for a book full of magic and wonder and, frankly, mystery… HALT! and read this book.

Magic and Wonder:

There are people in this book that have learned to control and work with the magic that they are born with. The few we come in contact with always have a mentor. And sometimes those mentors decide to put their students against each other in “a game.”

This magic is beautifully describe. You’ll loose your spot a few times just imagining the pictures being sewn in front of you, but it isn’t a chore to find it again. It’s whimsical and wonderful and just a good mind-dinner for anyone who loves magic.

Even the love that is in this book is magical. It’s a slow burn and beautiful.
I can’t really describe it correctly.

The Mystery:

NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IN THE WORLD THE GAME IS UNTIL CLOSER TO THE END AND WHAT THE COST OF SAID GAME IS. Literally drove me absolutely nuts; but it was worth the wait and the heartbreak of discovery.

Now, I need you all to know that this is not a fast past book. It is artistic, deep in detail and lively; but it is not fast and full of action. I listened to this book as an audio-book and if I could read this book again for the first time, I think I would have read it instead. When you don’t see the names for yourself and read the words on the page, you can get a little lost.

Again, if you don’t like slow-paced books told from more than one point of view, then this book probably isn’t for you. But I just love it so much. It was so rich in content and dreamy. I would read it again given the chance.

Women of the Otherworld #05: Haunted

THE CONTINUING ADVENTURES OF THE SMART, SEXY -- SUPERNATURAL -- WOMEN OF THE OTHERWORLD Eve Levine--half-demon, black witch and devoted mother--has been dead for three years. She has a great house, an interesting love life and can't be killed again -- which comes in handy when you've made as many enemies as Eve. Yes, the afterlife isn't too bad -- all she needs to do is find a way to communicate with her daughter, Savannah, and she'll be happy. But fate--or more exactly, the Fates--have other plans. Eve owes them a favor, and they've just called it in. An evil spirit called the Nix has escaped from hell. She feeds on chaos and death, and is very good at persuading people to kill for her. The Fates want Eve to hunt her down before she does any more damage, but the Nix is a dangerous enemy--previous hunters have been driven insane in the process. As if that's not problem enough, the only way to stop her is with an angel's sword. And Eve is no angel.... Book 5 in the Otherworld series.

WrensReads Review:

I love Eve. I don’t relate to her as much as I do Paige, but I do in the sense that I don’t always see the “nice” or “good” way to do something as the most logical solution.

Eve is dead.

As you would know if you have read the previous books. If you haven’t then STOP READING THIS AND MOVE ON TO THE FIRST BOOK AND WORK YOUR WAY BACK. There is a reason why it is the FIFTH BOOK IN THE SERIES.

Anyway,

Eve is OBSESSED with trying to protect her daughter Savannah. Which is normal for a mother. The only problem is that Savannah is living.. and doesn’t see/hear/feel/smell her mother at all and doesn’t even know that she may have someone watching her at the most inappropriate times.

The Fates are calling in their favor from the last book, and Eve may or may not like this favor. THE NIX is an issue.

This “Nix” is practically a kind of demon that feeds off of chaos. She helps people go through with killing/raping/torturing who wouldn’t usually go through with it and then leaves them to get caught, because more chaos.

For example, Lizzie Borden.

She is loose and it is Eve’s job to stop her before she traps Eve in a hell dimension/finds out what would make Eve stop/finds her way into the real world to raise hell to earth/normal evil things.

I love Kelley Armstrong’s writing and how each main character that she writes has a voice of their own. Eve is WONDERFUL and so is the story that she holds true. I like the afterlife that Armstrong created and I would love to explore that more. I know people are like “UGH SHE ISN’T ELENA I HATE THIS BOOK” but seriously if all 13 of these books were Elena, there would be some really stupid stories. I LOVE ELENA and PAIGE and EVE for who they stand alone as. And I also love that they are connect.

But I am also excited that Elena is back in the next book.

Women of the Otherworld #04: Industrial Magic

Paranormal

In the aftermath of her mother's murder, Paige broke with the elite, ultraconservative American Coven of Witches. Now her goal is to start a new Coven for a new generation. But while Paige pitches her vision to uptight thirty-something witches in business suits, a more urgent matter commands her attention. Someone is murdering the teenage offspring of the underworld's most influential Cabals, a circle of families that makes the mob look like amateurs.

WrensReads Review:

This book is more of a mystery type book plus the supernatural and the awkward meeting of the boyfriend’s family. There is someone killing Cabal kids (Cortez’s father’s empire of really rich sorcerers). First it starts out as half-demon employees and other supernaturals that aren’t sorcerers being killed; which means that they aren’t particularly worried about it. But when a sorcerer son dies…

Someone REALLY has it out for the Cabal empire.

Paige and Luke are at it again with special appearances by some werewolves, vampires, necromancers, clairvoyants and shamans. Just settling in with Luke and Savannah at an apartment, Benicio, Luke’s father, surprises Paige and peaks her interested in the case explained above.

There is a bunch of everything in this book. They meet some vampires that embrace “their true nature,” aka they sleep in coffins and don’t come out during the day, a clairvoyant who only uses her powers against her employer, and the extension of Luke’s family (which is VERY messed up).

Gore, Weirdness, Ghost…

oh and you meet the narrator for the next book!

Kelley Armstrong’s writing is something I can’t get over. She makes you view the story from one pair of eyes, manipulates how you feel about a certain scene while also making you laugh at every page. I would love to learn from her how to make things come alive on the pages as she does.

Still my favorite series to date. I can’t wait to read the next one!
